Operations Manager - Calgary - Alberta

As Operations Manager you are responsible for the development and implementation of operating plans to assure optimum efficiency, reliability and safety of the generation facilities. Reporting to the General Manager, Alberta Plants, you apply your business acumen across our fleet of plants including wind farms, peaking units, district energy facilities, co-generation facilities, and future combined cycle plants.

We’re looking for you if you are/have:

  • A 1st Class Power Engineering Certificate of competency (2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate will be considered depending on experience), journeyman trade, or engineering degree/diploma in a related discipline is an asset.
  • Five or more years experience managing the operation and/or maintenance of an industrial facility. This experience may include contract management of third-party vendors and/or supervisory leadership of trade personnel.
  • Proven ability to manage safety hazards to ensure safe operations.
  • The ability to apply innovative and creative approaches to solutions.
  • Analytical and decision making skills required.
  • Assertiveness in ensuring compliance and maximizing generation load.
  • The ability to clearly, effectively and concisely communicate.
  • Demonstrated understanding of trading, marketing, scheduling and associated cost factors.
  • Prior coaching/supervisory experience.
  • Above average math and computer skills and interpretation of plant diagrams, and schematics required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operations, regulatory compliance practices, procedures and priorities. In addition to understanding corporate and Generation policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of plant and field operations and maximizing generation load.
  • Organizational tasks and resources to meeting objectives and costs.
  • Advanced computer skills utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail programs, document control and drawing management systems, and diagnostic, testing, and troubleshooting equipment.
  • In this key role you will:

  • Manage the daily production activities for each of the generation facilities including wind farms, district energy, peaking, and base load facilities.
  • Be responsible for developing, revising and implementing standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain and enforce health, safety and environmental procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and permit conditions.
  • Handle critical incidents, take immediate and decisive action to maintain compliance with safety and environmental requirements and minimize disruption of operations.
  • Coach peers and subordinates to maximize individual and team performance and expand their capabilities.
  • Monitor performance of generation facilities and initiate action to maintain operating efficiency.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities to ensure optimum equipment availability.
  • Coordinate and specify procurement from vendors supplies, parts and consumables to insure on-going operational support and specific items needed for unique applications.
  • Participate in budget preparation and control of approved budgets by reviewing expenditures.
  • Participate with other corporate staff members, contractors, and consultants in planning, initiating and coordinating overall site activities.
  • Other duties as required, including call-outs and hands-on support as required during heavy workload, overhauls or emergency conditions.
