Can We Talk?

You Mean the American Nightmare

24 billion more dollars have been set aside to fight the war in Iraq.  Meanwhile, 13 million Americans are trying to exist on $5.15/hour.  There is no national health scheme.  If you’re not covered for health insurance at your work, you become a charity case.

“The greatest country in the world”, they like to call themselves.  Democracy, Freedom, yada yada.  The words ring hollow when you see what is really going on.  The poverty in the inner cities and in rural areas is scary.  Guess they don’t want you to see that.  Believe me when I tell you, it’s every person for him/herself in that country.

As a Canadian driving through the US, there have been times I got lost – made the wrong turn – and suddenly find myself in a deadly slum.  An eerie silence envelopes you.  Everything around you is seedy and tacky.  The hair at the back of my neck stands up and I make a hasty U-Turn to get the hell out of there ASAP.  I’ve never had occasion to feel that way anywhere in any city in Canada, day or night – or anywhere in Europe, for that matter.

It scares me to think that there are as many guns in the US as there are citizens.  And what’s the deal with illegal immigrants?  So what if they’re illegal?  Aren’t they the ones doing all the shit jobs nobody else is willing to do?  It’s not like they’re getting anything from the government – or is there something I don’t know?

I have no idea what the so-called “War on Terror” has cost, so far.  I do know that if they were to spend half that money on their own people, it would make them a much nicer place to live and even visit.

Say what you will but Cuba has national health care.  All education is free of charge – even university.  Now, who’s the better country?  Who’s the kinder government? Whose dream would you rather live?
